Does anyone know what the giant spiders that show up in north Georgia in the fall are called?
Every year these enormous spiders make giant webs around our doors and windows. We call them "Halloween Spiders" because they provide great decorations for the holiday. Not so great if one drops down on your head though. They are very fat and about the size of a quarter. My kids like to "feed" them by tossing bugs in their webs. Creepy, but cool.
These are likely common orb weavers in the Araneidae family.
There are over 2500 species of these and all are quite harmless.
(one is actually called a pumpkin spider)
I have a barn spider on my porch I feed also.
Bites from these are insignificant, and unless your kids try to grab one,
it wont bite.
You also have garden spiders in the Nephilidae family, called
golden orb weavers, that can get as large as an adult hand.
these likewise are harmless but their bite can sting a little.
Sadly, your kids pet will die with the first frost, but will leave eggs
that will hatch next spring.
