Behind Head Style
Behind Head Style

Best way to be come a Buddhist. I really don't like my life-style and the way the world is going.?
I'd love to fly over to Asia and take up Buddhism, and find inner enlightenment, or something. Im tired of the world, and how things are portrayed as materialistic only. Would it be a smart idea to spend a year or so reading up on it, and learning some of the language and heading over to Asia where it originated, and leave my country behind. Or should I just stay here and join a group, or a Buddhist meditational place.
There's probably no definitive answer to your question. However, here are some things you might consider:
- Buddhist practice involves dismantling our fantasies about ourselves and others. One of the biggest fantasies of all is that Buddhist practice will give us something that we don't already have.
- Many people want enlightenment, without realizing that enlightenment is always at hand. To attain enlightenment, we must become deeply intimate with our mind -- its habits, fantasies, stories, and delusions. The best way to develop this intimacy is through practice.
- Buddhist practice is not limited to any particular situation or country. The practice you learn in Asia will not differ materially from the practice you learn in America or France or Brazil. If you want to begin practice, you can do it right where you are, right now.
- I've practiced extensively in Asia and it's a wonderful experience. Part of what makes it so wonderful is that it's exotic and new -- and so everything seems fresh and alive. However, after a few months, Asia just becomes another place -- and I still have my own mind to contend with. The suffering we experience has nothing to do with where we live on the planet -- it comes from our mind. And our mind is always with us.
- Before spending the money to go to Asia, you might consider joining a local Buddhist group and learning how to practice. Many groups have affiliations with temples and centers in Asia and this would provide a good bridge for you, if later you decide you want to go. In the meantime, you'd have the benefit of settling into practice with the support of a local community. This support is unbelievably important.

Edit: Ms. WPF's wisdom is spot-on: "Start at home. There is no magical thing to being Buddhist. Nothing romantic, nothing spectacular, nothing in Asia that you can't find where you are. It comes from within you. "
